Ohio Athletic Commission Proposes Rule Changes in MMA

There are several rule changes that have been proposed by the Ohio Athletic Commission, effecting both amateur and professional mixed martial arts fighters competing in the state of Ohio. The changes are as followed:

-          Starting May 1st, 2010 Ohio will be experimenting on a trial bases with a Crusierweight Class. The new Crusierweight Class will be from 206lbs to 225lbs, with 226lbs to 265lbs as the new criteria for the Heavyweight Class.

In addition, several other changes have been proposed and are waiting on legislative approval:

-          All fighters, both professional and amateur, will be required to provide the Ohio Athletic Commission with proper blood work before being permitted to compete.

-          There will no longer be a mandatory next day weigh in for professional fighters. Instead, fighters will be reweighed at random by the Ohio Athletic Commission inspector on duty for that event. In addition, fighters competing at 155lbs and under will be given an 8lbs allowance, whereas fighters competing at 156lbs and above will be given a 13lbs allowance.

-          If a professional fighter fails to make weight, there are new infractions that will be enforced by the Ohio Athletic Commission. These include 2lbs over = $100 fine or 10% of the fighter purse and a fine, 3-4lbs over = $200 or 20% of the fighter purse and a fine, 5lbs or more = $400 fine or 25% of the fighter purse and a fine, and for all fighter purses of $10,000 or more = 50% of fighter purse and a fine. Anyone in violation of these rules will have to pay a fine or face a minimum suspension of 60 days.

-          Same day amateur weigh-ins will now take place at 10am.

“Our goal is to look out for fighter safety first and foremost, which is a big reason why these rule changes have been presented,” commented Ohio Athletic Commission Executive Director Bernie Profato exclusively with NAAFS.tv.

Who gets the fine percentage when a professional fighter doesnt make weight, the opponent of the fighter who did not make weight, or the Ohio Athletic Comission?

THE FIGHTER SHOULD BUT YOU KNOW WHO PROBABLY DOES LOL

  3. 3. John R Hawk Said:

So does this mean that the overweight pays the fine and still fights, if so does this put a disavantage on the other fighter that is at the proper weight?

  4. 4. Greg K Said:

My understanding was that the overweight fighter pays the fine to his opponent and that fight still goes on. If the overweight fighters opponent decides not to take the fight, then the overweight fighter faces suspention and fines will then be paid to commission.
