Interview with top prospect Cody Garbrandt

Posted by Administrator on February 12, 2011 – 1:11 pm
2/12/11 – Courtesy of Standthemup.org: Cody ” No Love Garbrandt is gearing up his February 26th showdown with bantamweight Victor Guareillo at the NAAFS “Caged Fury 14″.  Cody is quickly becoming one of the most dangerous bantamweights in the game and is hoping to fight his way through the always tough NAAFS national series.  Cody took sometime out of his busy schedule to talk with me about wrestling, fighting and of course Tyler Saltsman.
STU: You are matched up against Victor Guareiello in the NAAFS Caged Fury 14, how do you feel going into this fight?

CG:  I feel great training camp has  been going great

STU: Have you adjusted your training for this match up?

CG: Not at all I have worked more BJJ in this training camp with Justin Waters(h20) and Ricardo Peris.

STU: What do you know about Victor?

CG: Not a whole lot I have seen a few of his fights.

STU: Where are some of the places that you have trained at for this fight?

CG: Mainstreet MMA, Stongstyle, World Class Boxing, Evovle,H20

STU:  What got you into fighting originally?

CG: Well I have always been around fighting its been in my family for decades my Uncle was outstanding Boxer  he was an Olympic Alternate in 1991. Then I got into wrestling at a young age me and my oldest brother. Plus growing up in the Twin Cities you had to be tough and fight alot.

STU: I did an interview with one of your future opponents, Penn state wrestler Tyler Saltsman and he has confirmed that there is some hostility between you two. What are your thoughts on this?

CG: Yes there is, he runs his mouth on a damn Facebook account.  He doesn’t fight for the reasons I fight, this will be my career he does it for a free t-shirt and to tell chicks he is a self proclaimed UFC fighter.. lol

STU: Here is what he said about a match up between you and him:

I feel like it’s a bad match up for him. Cody is used to having the luxury of being comfortable on his feet because he has never really been threatened of a takedown. I will take him down and Cody better hope he is very good off his back if he is going to win this one. I feel that I am also bigger, stronger, a better wrestler, and have a better gas tank as well. Just like I said about Chapman, win or lose I’m going to put on a show and win or lose Cody will not want to fight me ever again.” Read entire interview HERE

STU: You are an accomplished Ohio based wrestler, although you are not as decorated as Saltsman do you feel you can stop his takedown attempts?

CG: Yeah I’m a state champion and state runner up from Ohio!  He is only decorated because he comes  from a weak wrestling state. I have never heard of anyone from there.  My movement is to fast for him to get close in on me so I will defend every takedown he attempts.

STU: How do you see your match up with Saltsman playing out?

CG: I see this as being another fight where I’m the better fighter and will take his heart away from him.

STU: How do you feel like you match up with a fighter like Chapman?

CG: That is who I want to fight. He is the title holder and I feel like I’m on another level than these guys. I respect Chapman alot more than Saltsman. He is the champion and he has what I want.

STU: What are your fighting goals for the new year?

CG: I’m taking it fight by fight. I’m not gonna sound like a fool and call out Miguel Torres like Saltsman did. But if I compete as an amateur and win the belt I will turn pro after the title fights and take it as far as it can go.

STU: Is there anyone you would like to thank?

CG: I would like to Thank The Lord for everything he has giving me. All my training partners who have helped me along the way all my coaches. All my sponsors for there help. And my Family and fans for there support. Also want to give a shout out to my City 922 ! and the Men and Women in our Armed Forces. God Bless.
